2027 Theme - Stories
New for the 2027 150mmChallengeAus, is the introduction of a theme that unites all the pieces: “Stories”
Entrants are invited to create a piece inspired by a story that resonates with them. It could be personal, historical, mythical, inherited, imagined, whispered through generations or discovered in the quiet. Big or small, heavy or tender, if it means something to you, it belongs here. Your story must accompany your piece. Tell us what shaped it, where it began, why it matters. Let the metal carry the weight and the words carry the soul.
As with previous years, there are two categories that individuals may enter:
Category 1: The Original
The original 150mmChallengeAus! Your submission must be made from one 150mm piece of 20mm mild steel square bar AND one 150mm piece of 12mm copper round bar and be created using traditional forging techniques only (forge welding, forged rivets only etc.). Please do not include any other materials. A limited number of materials packs are available on request from the Blacksmiths Festival Association at no cost (while stocks last).
Category 2: The 150mm Cube
This category takes the 150mmChallenge concept in a new direction. Your submission must be a maximum of 150mm high, 150mm wide and 150mm long. View a diagram of these maximum size parameters here. You can use any quantity and form of metal and metalsmithing technique to create your sculpture, object or piece of jewelry. Materials packs are not available for this category.
