2021 Metal Art Exhibition
In 2021, metal artists and blacksmiths from around Australia channeled their creative energies into a common question - what are the creative possibilities of 150mm length of 20mm mild steel square bar and 150mm 12mm copper round bar?

The concept behind the #150mmChallengeAus exhibition originated in a blacksmithing student assignment set by Lecturer Ambrose Burne at Hereford College of Arts (Hereford, UK) which became a viral social media sensation. Blacksmiths around the world have explored the creative limits of 150mm of 20mm mild steel square bar showcasing the breadth of ideas, perspectives, and approaches to the material and process.

As part of the Blacksmiths Festival 2021, the Waterside Blacksmithing and Metal Art Association (WBMAA) called out to metal artists and blacksmiths to expand upon the challenge adding the complexity of copper. The #150mmChallengeAus exhibition hosted in the Gabriel Gallery next to the Footscray Community Arts Centre revealed the results of this fiery call to action.

The exhibition was a huge success with several pieces sold, proving to be a tremendous example of the creativity in the Australian blacksmithing community.
