Collaborative Forging Display at the Blacksmiths Festival
The Blacksmiths Festival Association is excited to bring another unique and inspiring showcase project to this year’s festival. The collaborative forging display in 2025 will be led by esteemed Canadian blacksmith Sandra Dunn. This dynamic project made possible with funding from Maribyrnong City Council and West Gate Neighborhood Fund will bring together 14 local and international blacksmiths to forge an outdoor sculptural contemplative seat—an artistic and functional tribute to the late Councillor Sarah Carter.
A Tribute to Sarah Carter
Sarah Carter was a much-loved local Councillor who dedicated herself to the Footscray and Maribyrnong River communities. In her memory, this sculptural seat will be permanently installed near the festival site, offering a space for contemplation and reflection. The design will embody her vibrant personality and deep connection to the local community and natural landscape.
A Design Inspired by Place and Memory
Drawing from the industrial history of the site, the seat design suggests a railway spur line that veers toward the river, then rises and twists into a flock of birds. The forged steel frame will support wooden slats, arranged to evoke the feeling of a bird’s nest—offering both protection and comfort to those who sit within it. A privacy screen will gently separate the bench from the nearby foot and cycling path while maintaining openness to the river views. This sculptural piece will serve as both a work of art and a welcoming space for reflection.
About Sandra Dunn
This year’s Artistic and Technical Lead, Sandra Dunn, brings over 30 years of expertise in blacksmithing. A graduate of the University of Waterloo, Sandra established her full-time blacksmithing practice in 1993 and later founded Two Smiths, a design and prototyping studio specializing in sculptural and architectural forged works. Her work, spanning steel, copper, and bronze, has been featured in public and private spaces across Canada and internationally.
Sandra’s passion for collaborative projects makes her an exceptional leader for this masterclass. Her ability to blend technical skill with artistic vision ensures this sculptural seat will be both a tribute to Sarah Carter and a lasting addition to the festival site.
Experience the Process
Festival attendees are invited to observe the forging process, engage with the artisans, and witness the transformation of raw materials into a work of art. This is a rare opportunity to see the ancient craft of blacksmithing come to life in a contemporary context, as skilled hands shape fire and metal into a memorial that will stand for generations.
Join us at the Blacksmiths Festival to celebrate craftsmanship, collaboration, and community through this powerful and moving tribute.
