• Introduction to Blacksmithing for Women

This workshop is run by woman and intended only for individuals who identify as women or as an underrepresented gender. It is tailored for those who have little to no experience with steel and fire.

This one-day workshop will be led by special guest Annie Cole Arthur from Annie Cole Ironworks.

"Annie Cole Arthur is an American blacksmith who relocated to Sydney in 2022. She has been practicing the craft full-time for over a decade. Annie trained at the American College of the Building Arts in Charleston, South Carolina where she graduated as Valedictorian in 2017 and earned a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in the Building Arts with a Craft Specialization in Forged Architectural Ironwork. In 2023, Annie started her own business: Annie Cole Ironworks. Annie's work integrates traditional blacksmithing techniques with modern design to create anything from architectural items to sculptural pieces."

The workshop will provide an overview of the practice: primary tools, safety precautions, creative possibilities and most importantly a hands-on practical experience in moving metal. Participants will learn that blacksmithing isn’t about brute strength, it requires finesse and patience to accurately shape steel. Learning to manage a coke fired forge, students will focus on the fundamental techniques involved in traditional blacksmithing: manipulating metal, tapering, pointing, spreading, punching and scrolling.

Upon completion of the course, students will leave with a finished object of their own creation.
